Hello,
I, obviously, am not one of your students but can relate to your article. I was in the millitary for a time and have recently come down with a dibilitating condition that has cuased me no end of aggrivation and pain. Point in fact, this time last year my condition almost killed me. Not once during any of this did i ever feel sorry for myself or complain about why it was happening to me. I deal with the pain day to day and i do what ineed to do and i don't use it as a crutch to excuse me from my obligations. You are right when you say that if there is something you want bad enough you will find a way to get it. I can no longer do things the way i used to but that did not keep me from doing those things. I simply found different ways to do them. I see, in my day to day life, so many petty excuses for reasons why people do or do not do things they are obligated to. None of then are ever good reasons. If i mess up or fail it it usually, if not allways, my fault and not someone elses. I get angry with myelf for slacking and come up with a plan to work with so i don't do it again. That is not to say that i don't get lazy sometimes becuse i do. I believe everyone does. Very few of us will own up to it though.

Unfortuanately you are right. There is a trend building in this area. People are no longer being held accountable for thier actions and are being alowed to use excuses for everything in there lives. Most people today are incabable of admiting they are at fault. This trend is even more disturbing in the children. I hear i can't do it and its to hard too many times. All it is is an excuse to not put any effort into anything they need to do. I gaurantee that when it comes to something they want to do they will put an immense amount of effort into it. I cold write a boook on my coplaints in this department but the end result is that people in general are becomming very weak willed in their aproach to meeting their obligations in life and use excuses to cover up their blatent lack of resposibility. Those same people will then turn around and denounce those arround them for using those very same excuses when applied to them.

Its becomming an epidemic. We are raising our children to do the same thing becuase we are leading by example. Pretty soon if this trend is not stopped there will be no resonsible people left and this world will be run by peple who are incapable of taking any responsibility for anything and nothing will ever get done. I for one am tired of busting my butt and carying the slack becuase some on else has an excuse for everything when in most cases i am worse of than they are and can still manage to keep up my end and not complain. The end result is becuase of my attitude and my perserverance i continue to learn and grow and gain knowledge while the people around me continue to stagnate. If people wnat their lies to be better then they have to realize that nothing worth while in life ever comes easy. That you get exactly what you put into it and the amount of payback is directly proportional to the amount you invest You only hurt yourself when you make excuses.

I hope everyone in your class reads what you wrote and takes that as a lesson. Probably one of the most important lessons they can learn while in your class, but my experience tells me that most won't and when confronted with it they will yet again make another excuse.

Take care and good luck to you!
